The Troll By Toby Vince

For a long time, I found myself stumped by the fear of connecting my two passions, torn between the ‘visual arts’ and ‘performing arts’ that both stood in their own separate boxes. Until fairly recently, it had never occurred to me that the boxes didn’t actually exist and that the world wouldn’t fall apart if I picked up ‘illustration’ and put it inside ‘theatre’. So that's what I did. I found there were no earthquakes, no tsunamis, no avalanches, in fact there were no disasters at all, just a little glint of opportunity that I began to mine. As I continue to mine it and mix all of the boxes as much as I want, I hope that the work I create will spark this same realisation in others, and perhaps even inspire them to see what might happen if they pick up a box and put it with another.

Wendy and Peter Pan by the Oast Theatre

Now, I am a solo performer, maker, storyteller, artist, animator, comedian, and creative. Whichever category it falls best under my performances aim to:

  • Bring light to the little everyday details we so often overlook (like those really long bathroom light switches).

  • Bring a sense of joy to those watching it.

  • Keep creativity alive.

  • Mix media to make something unique.

  • Share stories (the tale of the brave individual who decided to try out knock-knock jokes in real life).

  • Ask questions (is the nose really the holder of the human soul?).

PROCRASTINATION

My first solo performance.

Noses, souls, people who can just do things, apparently, they’re all linked, and all things that come to make perfect sense to the mind of someone deep into the perilous spiral of procrastination.

Without this piece, I would not have become the performer I am today. It gave me passion and drive for creating comedy, as well as teaching me that I can incorporate art into performance. This performance is as much a journey for those watching it as it was for me making it, and neither of us will ever view noses in quite the same way again.

SHIFTER: VISIONS OF THE FUTURE

This devised immersive project transported the audience through 4 different rooms, each depicting an interactive vision of the future, before finally reuniting the audience members with one another in large carts, ready to consider and digest the sometimes bleak and thought-provoking encounters along the way. As well as performing as Irrigation Girl and other ensemble roles, I played a key part in producing artwork for this performance both as an interior motif throughout the rooms, and the promotional poster itself for the project.
